If you purchase a retractable patio awning it can pay for itself in utility cost savings over a period of years. With a retractable patio awning you can raise it in the winter to let the sun in to help heat the house. In the summer you can lower the patio awning to keep the sun out and air conditioning costs down. There is no way to retract or lower a wooden patio cover.
